Pimp My Music Library

// June 13th, 2011 // No Comments » // Computer, Guides, Music, Tips

If you know me well in person, you probably know that I love listening to music. Music keeps me company during my long bus rides, soothes my mind, gives me inspiration for stories and motivation to play musical instruments. I listen mostly to mainstream music, with the exception of Rap and R&B music. Thus as an avid listener of music, it’s hard for me not to keep up with the evolution of mainstream music.

In this post, I’ll share with you guys my routine of uncovering new songs that are dominating our speakers nowadays. Also, I’ll show you how I maintain my music collection.

Step 1: Discovering new songs

1. Billboard Top 100

2. The Top Charts from iTunes Store

Unfortunately, the music that gets blasted on speakers nowadays are seldom to my liking. So I often have to find other means of discovering music.

3. Last.fm

Last.fm is a paid service that costs $3.00 USD (aprrox $3.80 SGD) a month. In return, you get rewarded with gobs of new music. In short, Last.fm offers an excellent database of music and the ability to network with other users. What it essentially does is that it recommends you songs based on the kind of music you like to listen to with its customized radio. The customized radio makes smart choices based on other users’ input. For example, searching for Piano Rock music yields me many songs that are tagged Piano Rock by the community. Pretty cool, huh? And if you’re using a mobile that utilizes Android or iOS, you can download the Last.fm app for your mobile devices. That way, you can use Last.fm’s services anywhere you are ;)

4. Shazam

Finally, an app that can regonize the song that is playing in the background! I’ve been waiting for such an app since I was a teenager! Shazam can identify the name, album, and artist of a song just by hearing it over your iPhone’s microphone. You’ll have to hold the iPhone mic close to the speaker for a few seconds as a song plays – on the radio, in a coffeeshop, or at a party. More often than not, Shazam will accurately report back with the song’s name, and (if available) and other useful details. In case you’re wondering, it does work for songs other than English and soundtracks as well… although sometimes it can fail terribly.

Step 2: Downloading the songs

There are almost countless different ways you can go about stealing songs. But I’ll still show you my method of downloading music anyway. In all humbleness, I believe that my method is the most efficient and the most reliable way of downloading particular tracks. Therefore, after reading through this, you should just forget your old method and follow my method XD

Floating in the vast waters is a talented software named after its creator. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I present to you SciLor’s Grooveshark Downloader.

Don’t be deceived by its simple design. This nifty software can fetch you nearly all mainstream music you ever come across, all nicely tagged and transcoded into high quality MP3s. Unfortunately, this is unique only to Windows. Sorry Mac users :(

Now the reason why I said this method of downloading particular tracks is the best is because of its source of music, Grooveshark. In case you’re wondering, Grooveshark is a popular online music search engine and music streaming service. Think of it as Youtube, without the videos and high quality music. Coincidentally, the music player featured on He’s Blog is fueled by Grooveshark too. But wait, I haven’t said why it’s the best yet. You see, because Grooveshark has a strict uploading policy like ensuring that the songs uploaded by users have to be of at least 128kbit/s and properly tagged. So you can be rest assured that the songs you download from Grooveshark are the real deal, unlike some trash you get from using your own method. C’mon, you jolly well know what I’m talking about. Afterall, Grooveshark’s primary goal is to provide you with free, high quality music streaming. Without a doubt, Grooveshark has fulfilled their goal. So now do you concur that my method is the best? ;)

Step 3: Managing your library

Warning: This step can be a serious pain in the ass.

Here’s how my iTunes look like:

Click to enlarge picture.

Personally, I sort my music according to their Date Added. All my music are properly tagged, of high quality and contain their album art and lyrics. Not sure about you guys but I find this step extremely important, especially when you own an iPod because without proper tagging, your iPod will look really messed up. When that happens, my OCD acts up and it makes me wanna pull all my hair out and /wrist. But obviously, it’s a huge pain in the ass to do this manually. Trust me, I tried doing manually tagging for about 1 year before finally giving up. It consumes way too much time. That’s when I told myself that there’s got to be a software that does this kind of tedious task. And I was right. After much googling, I stumbled upon Pollux - software that automatically tags the song name, artist, album, album art, genre, year, and lyrics for you.

Regrettably, it’s not free. It costs $10 USD per year, but it will be worth the buck especially when you have a huge library of music to be tagged.

However, I do have to comment that it’s not foulproof. Here are some of its flaws:

  1. Wrong tagging. Sometimes, it tags some songs as being live or part of a “Greatest Hits” album. (about 10% of the time)
  2. Lyrics are left out at times (about 40% of the time)
  3. No album art at times (about 20% of the time)
  4. Does not tag at all (about 10% of the time

In summary, there are still certain tracks that you have to tag yourself. But considering that I had 1k plus songs to tag, it’s pretty worth the money. But I won’t be continuing my subscription after this year since I find manually tagging more reliable in tagging the newest additions as compared to using a simi-buggy program.

So there you have it! Now go pimp your music collection. ;)

Self Discipline And That Touch Of Nostalgia

// May 4th, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Life, Music, Piano, Thoughts

So I was in the living room, staying up late trying to finish the piano homework that my teacher assigned me over the week. In total, there were about 8 exam papers or so. Wow, yeah I know it sounds a lot, but trust me, it actually isn’t. So there’s really no reason for you to get shocked. It’s true that I can be a mugger at times but trust me, it’s really not that much.

Speaking of mugging, that moments of me scribbling away in the living room can’t help but remind me of the gruelling days I used to practise for the O-levels A math and E math examinations in the same exact environment. I remember spending at least 10 hours everyday of sole practising for a week. Yup, that’s really crazy. Hell I even woke up drenched in perspiration from nightmares of mind-wrecking equations that I can’t solve in my dreams. Looking back, I don’t even know how I even managed to endure through those days. But while I am glad that those days are over, that form of discipline has undoubtedly helped to push and place me where I am today.

Thankfully, while the piano definitely wouldn’t be as taxing as those days I’ve been through, the same form of discipline applies here. It’s all about practising and practising before reaching that standard. The difference is however, at least I enjoy it and I guess that’s all it matters.

Yup, that’s right folks.

Piano. Chapter Two Of The Music Journey Begins

// April 30th, 2010 // No Comments » // Life, Music, Piano, Thoughts, Videos

While this piece of news is definitely not going come as a surprise to some people, but yes, I’m indeed learning the piano and have been doing so for quite some time already. I must say I really enjoy it. It helps to keep me focused, relaxed and joyful. Not to mention it also makes me satisfyingly high at times. There is really no doubt that playing the piano is one of the most satisfying things that I’ve ever done in my life (right after jerking off. Or so I hear). There is absolutely no other feelings like playing a song on the piano and playing it flawlessly. Really, it’s quite an ego-boost, flex.

Recently, my mom got me a digital piano to further aid me in my learning. It is a P85 digital piano from Yamaha that costs about 1.2k. Well depending on how you are going to look at it. It can be considered economical or extravagant. If you’re looking at it from a beginner’s standpoint, then cheaper keyboards are usually the way to go. But really. After practising for weeks on my mom’s organ, I’ve developed a phobia of not being able to play a piece I’ve mastered at home at my teacher’s acoustic piano. Reason being, the keys on the organ/keyboard are too soft and my fingers grew weak because of that. So with this being said, I guess I was left with no choice other than a digital piano or acoustic pianos. But really, what I really need besides the key pressure is the ability to plug in a pair of headphones and practise. Also, let’s just say I’m not Mozart or whatsoever and I am trying to be considerate for my family members and neighbours. And did I mention, the touch of it feels almost identical to the piano my teacher has. Pianos all have different touch, but I’m sure the digital piano is going to be way closer to it than a keyboard could ever be. What’s more, you can set it to produce sounds from various instruments. My favorite of all these is definitely strings and there’s also the metronome which I still haven’t really make use of. =/

So why the sudden decision to pick up a piano? To be completely honest, there’s no sudden urge. Music, just like any of my other interests, has always been part of me. I’ve always wanted to pick up an instrument ever since I became a teen. So the moment I hit 13, I went ahead to learn drums but it was kinda the wrong step to begin with. It didn’t really serve my purpose very well because you don’t really learn much of music theory. I mean sure, you learn how to read the drum notations but really it’s all just rhythm. However, the pay off is that the drums present in music sounds ridiculously clear to me now. When I hear a piece of music now, drums just clearly stands out subconsciously and you can identify which parts of the drums was being hit, therefore allowing you to play a song by ear. I don’t remember it to be so clear before I started learning drums.

So after the drums but I was 16 that time and had to set aside some time to prepare for the ‘O’ levels, afterwhich I spent a great deal of time investing in computers. Shortly after I went into Ngee Ann Polytechnic in pursue of my passion in filmmaking and hell it was crazy. I practically did not have time for other things during school days. Sure, there were free time during the 2 month holidays that comes every 6 months or so but it’s back to hectic schedule again. And finally, the 3 years of my polytechnic education has come to an end this is where I am now.  This is when I get to continue my music joruney.

So now comes the question: “Where do I see myself 5 years down the road?” Well, honestly, it’s still too early to tell but I’ll be sure to hang on to piano till I’m at least Grade 5 – that’s where most people stop right? I hope to break that barrier and advance through it. But ultimately, I am hoping to reach the stage where I am capable to play most of the pieces I enjoy.

Here are a few songs that I look forward to play. Enjoy them. ;)

Man, I’m still amazed by this band cover. No keyboardist involved but the idea of playing in a band like this just wows me. I’ve always been looking for people to jam and play music. Sadly, not many of my close buddies are into music. Even the few people who play music differ from my taste of music. So… Hopefully, I meet new people that share my interests in the days that come.

Well, till then.

Warriors CAN own in PvP

// September 14th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Games, Music, Videos

While I was surfing one of my most visited blog RogueRogue during my WoW days, I came across this video – Gforce4, a video about Warrior PvP in WoW. So don’t bother reading the rest of this entry if you have never played WoW before. Anyways, even though I’m not a fan of the Warrior class, I got to admit that this player from China really has some decent skills in both PvP and editing man. Kudos to him and feel free to give this well edited video a watch.

Another thing worth mentioning is that this video has opened my ears to a new genre of of music, Death Metal. The first 2 pieces of music that plays during the PvP actions are the music that I am talking about. Really pretty decent music man. I have been spamming it for at least 10 times already. If you’re interested in them, here are some information about them.

霜冻前夜 – 冰封之夜
霜冻前夜 – 幻城之殇

What? Yup, that’s right. They are a Death Metal band from China. O.O I know… Me too. Holy smokes, who would have imagined that the Chinese could make some awesome music. Respect man. Enjoy the great music guys because I am enjoying them. Cheers.

Oh, in case you haven’t realized, yes this post is meant for you Sin Chyuan. You just got roflpwned in the face by saying “Warriors fail at PvP
